Forever

Leaning towards the darkness
that is his and only his,
his eye captures the moon.

Crickets chirrup evensong
as hesitant,
he takes first faltering step
into infinity.

He flies without feathers.

Soon
he will be naught but a red jewel
in an endless sea.

He will ride with the tides,
forever searching, forever searching,

forever searching
for the lovely shadow of her face.

Grace’s challenge at Real Toads is to write a new poem or prose poem in response to James Wright’s words – please see prompt here.  The above is my response to his poem ‘Beginning.’

The refrain of forever searching, made it poignant for me ~ There are darkness that can't be shared, ever ~

I am glad to see you Anna ~ Wishing you happy weekend ~

Somehow that distance and loneliness of the moon lends itself to that metaphor of the loneliness of love.. And yes like Grace, the refrain of searching made it extra poignant.. I'm always happy reading your poetry.

Some searches go on forever. That is the way life is, and if not for the searches...what then would be life?

Great to see you at PU today, Anna.

Anna, this is beautiful and elegaic and could aptly be titled Endings......I love his eye capturing the moon and taking his first steps into infinity. I especially love "he flies without feathers." So poignant that he will ride forever searching for "the lovely shadow of her face." A gorgeous piece. So nice to see you here this morning.

The poet does seem to be in love with the moon! Your response is quite haunting.

That's what the moon does ... and a few people, maybe ...

Beautiful personification of the moon! I love the imagery throughout and the disappearing over sea.
