The Betrayal

You lie there safe
Resting in your final slumber,
Buried
With your filthy secrets.

Revered are you,
Homage paid by those
Who have not notion
Of evil hidden under Holy Orders.

Why does God
Protect you even now,
Lying in your silken casket,
Dark heart no longer beating,
Yet still pulsating into mine?

Little lambs lie after lights out,
Begging Sweet Jesus
"Please let it not be me."
Dorm door swings open,
Cassock flowing, heavy breathing,
Excited,
He selects his victim.
Child cries out
"My God, why hast thou forsaken me?"

Secrets lie deep with me,
Secrets that I dare not tell,
Your evil still resides within me,
I hope to God you rot in Hell.

Deep, dark and frightening, but beautifully handled. I did think when I got to "Little lambs" that it might be going to get sentimental, but no, it stayed strong and robust as it needed to. There are some brilliant passages:

Lying in your silken casket,
Dark heart no longer beating,
Yet still pulsating into mine?

for one.
Well done.

Your Magpie is quite powerful ... I enjoyed it!

Anna, that is brilliant. Two men are in prison as I write, convicted of sexual acts against children (mine espcaped. Just)during the 1980s in the school of a VERY well-known Anglican cathedral. Yet where was the publicity? My son is still wondering whether to spill the beans to the press, as he feels (as do I) that the cathedral got away practicallyl scot free, although we had warned them that things were seriously wrong when we took our son away. They did nothing. (Sorry - I got a bit carried away there.)

Horrifying, but beautifully crafted.

A nasty story well told. My Magpie this week is A Plot Both Great and Grand.

Trust, defiled. God will deal with them, I have no doubt. But would have like these evil people (all those, not just religious) face their crimes while alive.

Strong and angry poem. Powerful!

Heartbreaking, Anna. And yes, so many got away with it, and apparently still do.

Apologies for the delay in thanking you for your kind comments folks - megga PC problems and working off a laptop (kindly loaned by my dear daughter-in-law) which I found quite alien! (Can't teach an old dog new tricks!) However my baby is now back!

Frances ~ No problem and sort of understand your sons problem as in wondering whether to spill the beans (or not).

Poem is based on an anecdotal story told to me, and although he too escaped he is still very much a victim in that (in the way that children do) he worried that there was something wrong with him in that he was not chosen.

What an utter mess made of childrens lives by those in whom utter trust should be unquestionable.

A powerful poem...this struck a chord too real in me...I suffered abuse as a child...a horrid secret that had me attempting to take my own life

I like how this was told.

Wow. Beyond terrifying, but you handle the subject beautifully.
Thank you--and thank you for the kind words you left at my place today.

Frightening subject matter here, but these sorts of stories need to be brought to people's attention so that more action can be taken.

Like the others I thought you handled this subject well. Childhood sexual abuse is absolutley devastating for the children who experienced it; confusion, anger and internal agony - to tell or not to tell. I hope you find a way to publish this more broadly. Congratulations!

A chilling and unsentimental look at a too real problem. Bravo for taking it head-on!
