Winter Feasts

Stripped bare
By autumns theft,
Skeletal now
Her frigid branches
Ache
To touch the warmth
Of rising Sol.

Dormouse, dormant
Curled deep
In winters sleep
Scratched out by
Hungry Fox.

Opportunist he,
He watches waiting
As Redbreast bobs
Through evergreen
Bearing
Seasons berries.

And distracted by
Her luscious feast of
Rich red rubies
Becomes easy fare
Feathers
On his winter table.

Jingle Poetry at Gooseberry Gardens prompt is:  Snow, December, Winter Vacations and Wildness.

I must admit to being lazy and greatly slightly unprepared for Christmas, hence I have taken the easy way out and stolen an earlier (written in May)  post from t’other much neglected blog (Puzzelicious).

Merry Christmas folks!

Writing poems is so much more interesting than "getting ready for Christmas" (whatever that means. Well, I guess it means what I'm not doing now). Lovely poem. Thank you!

It's the thought that counts, not when you had it! (I just added that last part--pretty clever, I'm thinkin!) Nicely done, Anna!

I really liked this poem. Very descriptive of winter and the winter activities of the sly fox.

A real joy to read. It has done as much to put me in the Christmas mood (whatever that is) as anything yet this time around. Lovely. Particularly fine: the last stanza.

A lovely encapsulation of moments in the life (and death) of winter. Wonderful imagery in this one, Anna.
Best wishes for wonderful Christmas!

Hi Anna .. love the poem - describes Winter and this time of year wonderfully well .. so it's Mr Fox who's been getting the pigeons? .. I hope there aren't any robins in the hedges.

Have a very happy and merry seasonal break .. and a successful 2012 - cheers Hilary

I love this, Anna. It is tightly woven and evocative of so many traditional winter scenes. Surprised you actually penned it in May... funny!

This is lovely, Anna (but not so much for the Robin!)

All best from your hairy man, Timoteo!

What a beautiful poem reflecting the season and natures response to it. OK, I was a little peeved that the Robin succumbed to the wily fox but in the heat of Christmas in Australia it is lovely to be reminded of my earlier years in the UK. Happy Christmas and thank you for your visit to the start of my adventure with Io.

My daughter is experimenting with her first English winter after a lifetime in Australia. Your poignant poem suits our mood her in sunny Sydney as we Christmas without her.

Light the fire and enjoy your Christmas dinner! :-)
