Whatever

I
ask
him: Do
you like me?
He says: Like? Y’know, whatever.
And my cool dude speaks into his cell
And I take his callous hand; place it on my ever growing belly.
He shrinks back, says: Hey! What the hell
I have never ever said
I loved you,
have I?
Well,
whatever,

I
mumble
in defence
and turn away
tears drooling down my face.
Well, I guess I will be going then
I say and he cuts me dead (two-fingered Well F*ck You Whore)
and laughs into his cell: Won’t see her
no more, the stupid cow.
Stupid I am.
I know
that
now.

Do I care…well, whatever.

Tony at dVerse has us looking back to prompts of 2013 and regaining inspiration there.  I chose to return to his Mathematical Series and a Fib.  (The last line shouldn’t be there – but do I care…well, whatever :o])  Also, the title and theme of the poem was inspired by the prompt ‘Whatever’ by those fine folk at Trifecta – long time since I visited there – so hello again (and thank you) Trifecta!

Many of my young female colleagues are single mums - who were so overjoyed when becoming pregnant and initially their 'partners' professed to be too - and then they legged it.  When I ask these naive young folk - who truly believe they are liberated - if they are hurt, they invariably answer: Whatever...

Mega PC probs over the hols left me isolated from the wonderful world of t’net – so, so glad to be back.  Hope you all had grand hols and that this New Year will be grander!

ugh...what a horrible reality eh? yeah you have to be choosy in who you give yourself away with cause you either have to live with them or the consequences....sometimes i really wonder how some people end up together as well to see the way they treat each other....

Poor thing. I think he'll regret walking away at some point in his life. You did great with the form, Anna.

Good poem, but sad subject. I wonder why your colleagues get themselves into this mess.
I hope you had a peaceful Christmas and all the best for 2014. Glad that your network problems are now resolved.

You chose a difficult form and a difficult subject to go with it. Very effective use of both.

I agree with Jenny Woolf: Good poem, but sad subject. Leonardo Fibonacci described growth of a rabbit population with it, so it unintentionally crossed my mind there is even a connection between the poem's form and topic ...

tough one, Anna. Good use of the fib, too. ~

My heart broke reading this. Sad circumstances at a time where elation should be. Loved the formatting!

this was lovely - no whatsoever at all.

We have never shown the young the meaning of love, and they end up trying, whatever.

I so love the fib poems ~ Well whatever goes, better leave him be ~

Happy New Year to you ~

... yap ... whatever ... but look at that rainbow :)

Yes, I agree...a tough subject and I suspect that those who utter that word "whatever" really do care. Why they choose to hide their true feelings I don't know. Have to keep up a cool exterior I guess.

You did a good job, Anna...got me rankled up a bit. :) Glad to be back and visiting you again.

Happy New Year!

oh heck...this is just terribly painful and happens way too often...makes my heart bleed a bit.. you did well with capturing the emotions..

How sad! I can't imagine how horrible it would be to live that.

Happy New Year Anna. What can we say? Sadly this cycle repeats itself ever so often; good girl falls in love with bad boy, he breaks her heart and she becomes bitter or reflective.

this is sad reality. excellent the way you capture the emotions.

This makes me feel bad for her. He seems selfish...

Ouch.. Brilliant series Anna.. Love the use, including the violation of the form. Those dudes just go on and on.

The way people can callously treat each other is terribly sad. Great capture of this, and nicely done on the form as well!

One has to move on...I like the mathematical form here....works great!

Hard poem to read, Anna, but so true to too many young womens's reality. I think 'Whatever' is a kind of blanket response that allows the speaker to ignore their real feelings about the matter, and invites the questioner to do the same. Sad, really sad.

It is an incredible blow when somebody backs out on you like that. But then, there are many single mothers who have turned out to be great parents/ Says a lot about their strength and determination. Not an easy road to take but they made it through.

Oh, and great work with the prompt(s). :)

Unfortunate, but its a difficult truth.

great job with the form. I think you caught the subject matter well - wether it be a harsh reality or not, you've got the vibe there. The trying to find something that's not there, the callous disregard for others feelings, the empty values, the careless saving of face. I'm glad she realized she was stupid - many don't.

Frightening situation and dialogue! I wonder how many young women fall for this kind of guys.

Sometimes people don't seem to think. Will they ever want to go through it all again. Some may have regrets obviously! Thought provoking Anna! Great!

I think that single Moms, who truly give their all for their child, are some of the bravest, best people on the planet! Great word usage throughout. You really captured well the street-level reality of your characters. Loved the poem's form. Never knew this style until your poem.....thanks for broadening my horizons. :)

Truly perfect. Such a difficult concept has come out so nicely - brilliance in brevity.

Sad situation, but beautifully expressed in the poem, and the form worked well, too. Thank you--and a happy happy 2014 to you.

This has the cold calculus of bodies engaged where hearts haven't the math to equate. One wonders how it ever added up in the first place.

This is a painful poem to read. So hard to see these young people who get themselves into difficult circumstances and then answer with 'whatever' as if they really were not hurt!

Sad, sad, sad. Well written social commentary Anna.

Wow, well done.. you captured it perfectly. I know someone like this - 2 kids with 2 fathers and she's all about whatever...

Love the form and the language. I find the 'whatever' strangely hopeful. The first step to reclaiming herself.

Really beautiful poem. Heartbreaking.

What a tough piece. Great work.

sad and horrible. there are so many such untold stories playing with emotions. you spin it so well here

I think 'whatever' is hopeful, too. Sometimes we grow the most when we stop caring so much. I love the rhythm of this. It's like Fib and Beat had a baby. Nice job.

Somehow, this reverse form highlights the attitude perfectly - it builds and falls… and leaves me feeling so empty!
