Gone

I don’t suffer fools gladly
and I think that’s why I don’t like me anymore.

I search for you in the margins
and find your footprints in the sand;
embedded, resolute,
defying the soft wash of the tide
as it lazies itself to the shore.
There is permanence in your absence.

I have toothache in my heart,
it is throbbing away and I can’t stand the pain.
I miss you.

I don’t suffer fools gladly
and I think that’s why I don’t like me anymore... think we've all been there and helplessly wondered at our own selves. Nicely put Anna.

Some arresting phrases here. I particularly like the image of the tide 'as it lazies itself to the shore'. Memorable!

It is awful missing someone.I hope I am spared this sort of pain ever again because from memory the person is usually not worth it. This is heartfelt and a very beautiful poem.

Love those first lines... and I can recognize myself there.

You had me right after that killer first line!

Missing someone and knowing you're a fool for doing so is painful but it has happened to us all, I guess.

"I have toothache in my heart" What a wonderful way to describe heartbreak

I have toothache in my heart...that is exactly what loss feels like. Excellent.

Anna, I like your thought of finding footsteps in the sand. An accidental find might be refreshing and giving relief. But don't we sometimes look for those prints? Then whether we find them or not things can get to be very painful. Memories, good and bad, amplified as well.

To suffer so. How many waves will it take?

Oh dear--a toothache of missing is really painful! Great image, and poignant poem. Thanks.

That is the saddest part of breakups, realising you were partly to blame as well, and then everyplace you went together is a reminder of when you were a couple. Many of us would empathise with this.

I like the way you describe pain in this poem, Anna, from searching in the margins to the
'toothache in my heart'.

I know exactly what you mean by the permanence of absence. Well said.

Those last three lines tell flesh and soul tales, so many of us have lived... and will never forget. Brilliantly bittersweet. And deep... so, so deep.

Oh, Anna, this is a sad poem, but a very good and moving one.

This is so good. Perfect.

Permanence is hard - there's no hope, just the dealing with "it"

Lovely despite of its sadness.
